NICET Level 2 fire alarm practice test (free)

Level II rewards the technician who can follow a job from the drawing to the device to the record, and do it against the clock. Practice that only checks facts misses most of it. Use this page to try original Level II practice questions for free, see which domain is costing you points and decide what to study next. What Level II asks you to practice

Fire Alarm Systems Level II has 110 questions in 155 minutes, about 1.4 minutes an item. It is open book, and NICET gives you a built-in calculator, so personal calculators stay home. Practice under those conditions. The Level II exam guide covers the format, blueprint and a two-to-four-week plan, and the on-screen reference guide shows how the supplied references behave.

Your practice should cover four domains:

DomainWhat a good practice question makes you doWhere to go when you miss it
InstallationPlan work from field conditions, choose pathways and raceways, place equipment and walk through commissioningNAC vs SLC circuits and fire alarm cable types
MaintenanceBuild a test plan, troubleshoot a fault, handle an impairment and keep records that hold upTesting and maintenance and SLC loop troubleshooting
Submittal preparation and system layoutSurvey a site, assemble submittal information, lay out devices and size powerSubmittals and layout
Management and supervisionCoordinate the work with other trades, the owner and the AHJThe coordination section of the Level II exam guide

The calculation-heavy questions sit mostly in submittals and layout. Check your arithmetic with the battery calculator and voltage-drop calculator, and read the battery method and voltage drop formula guides to learn why each input is there. To practice finding chapters against the clock, try the free Level II lookup drill.

Turn every miss into a study task

A score tells you where you lost points. A short log tells you why. After each practice session, write one line per miss:

  1. Domain and topic. Which of the four domains was it?
  2. Miss type. Missing knowledge, slow lookup, calculation setup, or a misread instruction?
  3. The fix. One sentence on what you will do differently, and one lesson or reference to revisit.

Fix the biggest group first. If most misses are slow lookups, drill navigation on the clock. If they are calculation setups, redo the worked example with new numbers. Do not repeat the same set until you remember the answers. A repeat score can reflect memory, not skill. Change the numbers, or explain each answer out loud before you look.

Where Level II practice differs from Level I

Level I checks that you know the basics. Level II asks you to apply them on a job: sizing power supplies, reading drawings, writing up tests and leading the work. If you are still building the basics, start with the Level I practice guide. Then come back here. The level requirements guide explains the experience each level needs.

Ready to find your weak domain?

Start the free 10-question Level II check and see your score by domain. Ten questions are a small sample, so a good result is a starting point and not a prediction of your exam result. The Alarm Ladder course then drills your weak domains with timed practice and an explained answer for every question. For fees and retake rules, use the exam fees guide and the testing locations and rules guide.
