NICET fire alarm Level II to Level III
You passed Level II. You can read a drawing, test a system and size a battery. Level III keeps those skills and asks you to take responsibility for other people doing them. This guide compares the two exams side by side using NICET's published documents, so you know what to change before you start studying.

Four things that change
1. You approve, not only perform. Level III tasks are written around supervising projects, managing periodic testing, and preparing and approving shop drawings. Study each task by asking who checks the work, what record shows it was done and what you do when it is not.
2. Management and supervision doubles in weight. The range moves from 5 to 15% to 10 to 20%, and its single task splits into supervising work activities and supervising team members. Practice them as decisions you would make on a job, not as definitions.
3. NFPA 101 joins the reference list. NICET lists the Life Safety Code (2021) for Level III and puts it on screen as a read-only PDF. Practice moving between the life safety code and NFPA 72, and knowing which one answers which question.
4. Layout becomes review. Level II splits submittals into several tasks. Level III has one: prepare and approve shop drawings. Spend your time finding what is wrong with a drawing set, not only making one.

What stays the same
- It is still open book with a built-in calculator, taken at a Pearson VUE test center. Online proctoring through OnVUE is offered for Level I only.
- The Level II calculations, power supply loading and voltage drop, still matter because Level III has you check somebody else's.
- NICET's scoring is the same 0 to 700 scale with 500 as the lowest passing score, and it publishes no pass rates.
Experience: what Level III asks of you
Passing the exam is one part of certification. The candidate handbook asks for supervisor-verified performance measures at Levels I, II and III, at least 5 years of full-time equivalent experience including 45 months of fire alarm systems work, and a personal recommendation. The 3 years beyond Level II must include field experience, team leadership and at least 1 year in a fire alarm technical management role, and up to 15 months of the 5 years may be related experience.
NICET's exams page says there are no pre-qualifications for taking an exam, and that testing for a higher level before you meet the experience requirement is allowed but strongly discouraged. Read the current handbook and talk to NICET before you plan around that. Our NICET level requirements guide and work history guide explain what counts.
How to adjust your study
- Reuse your Level II notes for lookup speed. Your NFPA 72 tabs still work. Add tabs for NFPA 101 and the IBC.
- Swap drawing practice for review practice. Mark up a drawing set for gaps instead of drawing one.
- Add scenario practice for supervision. Take a situation, decide the next step and write down why.
- Sit a timed form early. At 170 minutes, pacing is its own skill. Level II's 155-minute habits will not carry over automatically.
If your Level II was a while ago, our Level II exam guide is a quick way to refresh the base. The Level III exam guide covers the Level III outline and reference list in detail.
