NICET I&T Level 2 practice test (free)

Inspection and Testing Level II is about the places where the fire alarm system meets the rest of the building: elevators, smoke control, sprinkler and suppression systems, emergency communications and specialized detection. Good practice makes you plan the test, tell inspection from functional testing and write down what you found. Use this page to try original I&T Level II practice questions for free and decide what to study next. See all levels and tracks on the NICET practice test hub.

What I&T Level II asks you to practice

Inspection and Testing Level II has 80 questions in 110 minutes, about 1.4 minutes an item. It is open book, and NICET gives you a built-in calculator, so personal calculators stay home. The I&T Level II exam guide covers the format, blueprint and a two-to-four-week plan. Use the I&T reference list and not the Fire Alarm Systems one. The comparison guide explains the difference.

Sort your practice by domain and then by interface:

DomainWhat a good practice question makes you do
Plan and coordinate workSet the scope when other systems are involved, survey devices and records, and decide who needs to know before, during and after a test
Inspect interfaces and specialty equipmentTrace an interface from the fire alarm equipment to the connected system and decide what to look at and which documents to check
Test functionality of specialized and interfaced equipmentState the initiating action, the expected response, what you observe and how you restore the system

The interfaces to rotate through are elevator recall and shutdown, smoke control, suppression and pre-action releasing, emergency communications, specialized detection (air sampling, beam, duct, flame and gas), networked control equipment, and sensitivity and complex notification. The testing domain is the heaviest, so give it the most sessions.

Keep inspection and testing apart

A common practice mistake is treating an inspection finding as proof that something works. Finding a connection is not the same as showing it operates. When you review a miss, ask which of these went wrong:

  • Scope or coordination. You missed who needed to be told, or which other system was involved.
  • Inspection. You looked at the wrong equipment or documents.
  • Functional test. You chose the wrong initiating action, expected the wrong response or forgot restoration.
  • Measurement. You mixed up a sensitivity reading with a simple activation check, or misread a unit.
  • Records. Your close-out would not tell the next technician what you did.

Write one line per miss with the domain, the interface, the miss type and one fix. Then work the weakest interface group first. For measurement and record habits, the testing and maintenance guide and the SLC loop troubleshooting guide help. Use NAC vs SLC circuits before you interpret a fault response.

Do not repeat a set until you remember the answers. A repeat score can reflect memory, not skill. Change the scenario, or explain the test sequence out loud before you check.

The Alarm Ladder course then drills your weak domains with timed practice and an explained answer for every question.
