Kentucky fire alarm inspector certification and NICET: what the state asks for
Does Kentucky require NICET to inspect fire alarms? Not exclusively. Kentucky's fire marshal regulation says the people who inspect and test fire alarm systems must be authorized or certified by the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction. To become a certified fire alarm inspector you can either hold NICET Fire Alarm Systems at Level II, III or IV, or pass the alarm inspector examination given by an exam provider the department approves. Either way you also need recent hands-on experience. This page sums up the regulation. Check the department's current forms and fees before you apply.
What the regulation covers
The rule, 815 KAR 10:060, applies to buildings other than one- and two-family dwellings. Its Section 7 deals with testing and inspection of fire protection systems:
- A required inspection or test must be done and reported by a person the department authorizes or certifies.
- The result goes on the report form that matches the system's standard (for fire alarms, a form from NFPA 72), is given to the owner, and a copy goes to the local fire chief or senior fire department officer within ten working days.
- Fire detection and alarm systems are inspected and tested every year in most buildings. In state-licensed hospitals, nursing homes and ambulatory surgical centers the interval is every quarter, by a Kentucky certified inspector. Where the manufacturer asks for more frequent checks, those apply.
- Owners may check single-station smoke detectors themselves and keep their own logs, with no filing with the State Fire Marshal.
Becoming a certified fire alarm inspector
- Pick a route. NICET Fire Alarm Systems Level II, III or IV, or the approved alarm inspector exam. The regulation does not name Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems, so ask the department before assuming that program counts.
- Document 18 months of experience in installation, repair, testing or a mix, within the 5 years before you apply.
- Apply on the department's fire alarm certification form with a passport-style colour photograph.
- Pay the annual certification fee. The regulation sets $50 for each classification.
- Renew every year with the department's renewal form, the same $50 fee per classification and a photograph. Show either 6 hours of continuing education from an approved provider in the 12 months before renewal, or a current NICET certificate.
The department can deny or refuse renewal for things like an inspection that does not follow NFPA 72, false inspection reports, inspecting before being certified, or false statements on an application.
Why a NICET certificate is useful here
A current NICET certificate does two jobs in Kentucky. It can qualify you at the start, and it covers the renewal education requirement. If you already hold a current NICET certificate, the regulation lets it stand in for the 6 hours. See the recertification guide and the certification lookup guide for how status is shown.
What Level II asks of you
Level II is open book and timed. It links installation and maintenance to drawings, loading calculations and coordination. Read the Level II exam guide for the domains in plain words, and the level requirements guide for experience.
