NICET Level 1 fire alarm practice test (free)

Level I is open book, so the score goes to the person who finds the answer fastest. Practice the way the exam asks: read the stated conditions, pick the NFPA 72 section, apply it and check your units. Every answer below shows where it lives by chapter and section. Then take the free 10-question check and see which domain is costing you points. Not sure this is your level? The NICET practice test hub compares every level and track.

How Level I is tested

Fire Alarm Systems Level I has 85 questions in 110 minutes, about 1.3 minutes per item. NICET provides NFPA 72 (2022) and NFPA 70 (2020) as on-screen references, and your level's reference list says which printed books you may bring. Personal calculators are out; you get the on-screen one. Items include single-answer, stated-count multiple-answer, image-selection and exhibit formats.

The full outline, fees and retake rules are in the Level I exam guide. Read the on-screen reference guide before test day so the viewer is no surprise.

3 sample questions with answers

These are original practice items written for Alarm Ladder. They are not NICET questions.

1. Battery sizing. A panel draws 0.35 A in standby and 1.6 A in alarm. The job calls for 24 hours of standby followed by 5 minutes of alarm, with a 20% margin. Which is the smallest battery that meets the load: 7 Ah, 10 Ah, 12 Ah or 18 Ah?

Answer: 12 Ah. Standby is 0.35 A × 24 h = 8.4 Ah. Alarm is 1.6 A × (5 ÷ 60) h = 0.133 Ah. The total is 8.53 Ah, and the 20% margin makes it 10.24 Ah. 10 Ah is the no-margin trap, and 7 Ah is too small either way. 18 Ah works but is not the smallest. Navigate by NFPA 72 (2022) Chapter 10, §10.6.7. Our battery calculator checks the arithmetic.

2. Voltage drop. Two conductors run 150 ft from the panel to the last horn strobe on a NAC. The wire is 0.003 Ω/ft and the full alarm load is 0.8 A. The panel's NAC terminals supply 21.6 V. What voltage reaches the last appliance: 21.24 V, 20.88 V, 20.16 V or 19.80 V?

Answer: 20.88 V. The current travels out and back, so the conductor length is 2 × 150 = 300 ft. Resistance is 300 × 0.003 = 0.9 Ω. The drop is 0.9 × 0.8 = 0.72 V, and 21.6 − 0.72 = 20.88 V. 21.24 V counts one direction only. 20.16 V doubles the length twice. Practice it again with the voltage-drop calculator.

3. Code navigation. You need the room-size spacing for ceiling-mounted visible notification appliances in NFPA 72 (2022). Which chapter do you open first: Chapter 10, Chapter 12, Chapter 14 or Chapter 18?

Answer: Chapter 18. Notification appliances live there, and the visible appliance requirements are in §18.5. Chapter 10 is fundamentals (power supplies sit here), Chapter 12 covers circuits and pathways, and Chapter 14 covers inspection and testing. Finding the chapter in seconds is the skill the open-book format rewards.

How to use practice tests on an open-book exam

  • Set a clock. Aim for about 1.3 minutes per item. If you are at 3 minutes and still searching, flag it and move on.
  • Tab or bookmark what you use. Note the section number beside every miss. Candidates say it plainly: everything is tabbed so you can find stuff quickly.
  • Find it, then close it. Look up the section, close the reference and find it again from the contents. That is the repeatable skill.
  • Log the miss type. Knowledge gap, navigation delay, units error or misread instruction. Fix the biggest group first.
  • Do not memorize answers. A repeated score can reflect memory. Change the numbers and redo the item.
  • Drill the plan symbols too. The fire alarm symbols quiz runs 18 device symbols and plan tags, each answer explained.
