Finding answers in NFPA 72 on a test-center screen

DraftPending expert review. Check anything you rely on against your own licensed code book.

✓ Checked 17 Oct 2026 against NICET's reference lists, candidate handbook, Pearson's NICET page and NFPA's public chapter listing.

For Fire Alarm Systems Levels I and II, NICET lists NFPA 72 (2022) and NFPA 70 (2020) as on-screen PDFs. Its references page describes the on-screen material as read-only and says candidates may also bring permitted physical copies. Learn the document's organisation before trying to make every lookup faster.

What the official sources establish

The Level I reference list and Level II reference list identify the editions and PDF format. The additional permitted printed reference differs: Ugly's Electrical References (2020) at Level I, IBC (2021) at Level II. Neither is included in those lists' on-screen pair.

Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems is a separate track. Its Level II reference list provides NFPA 72 (2022) and NFPA 92 (2021) on screen. Do not carry one track's reference assumptions into another.

The Fire Alarm Systems candidate handbook describes an introductory tutorial and built-in basic and scientific calculators. Pearson's NICET page links a demo test and a test-center tour. Use those provider resources to prepare for the interface, alongside the current program documents.

What we couldn't confirm: NICET's and Pearson's current documentation establishes read-only PDF access but doesn't describe the viewer's search, bookmark, page-jump or keyboard controls. Don't count on Ctrl+F or a particular toolbar; practise navigating by chapter and section numbers.

Build a chapter map first

These chapter numbers and titles are from the public NFPA 72 (2022) listing. They are navigation labels only. No requirements, tables or code explanations are reproduced here.

  • Chapter 1: Administration
  • Chapter 2: Referenced Publications
  • Chapter 3: Definitions
  • Chapter 7: Documentation
  • Chapter 10: Fundamentals
  • Chapter 11: Cybersecurity
  • Chapter 12: Circuits and Pathways
  • Chapter 14: Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance
  • Chapter 17: Initiating Devices
  • Chapter 18: Notification Appliances
  • Chapter 21: Emergency Control Function Interfaces
  • Chapter 23: Protected Premises Alarm and Signaling Systems
  • Chapter 24: Emergency Communications Systems (ECS)
  • Chapter 26: Supervising Station Alarm Systems
  • Chapter 27: Public Emergency Alarm Reporting Systems
  • Chapter 29: Single- and Multiple-Station Alarms and Household Signaling Systems

The gaps in this list follow the reserved chapters in that edition. Use your own licensed copy to explore below the chapter level. Write section numbers in your study log instead of transcribing passages. This keeps the exercise focused on finding material you can read in its original setting.

A navigation routine with your own copy

The following is our suggested practice routine. It trains familiarity with the document; it does not claim to recreate Pearson's viewer or the exam.

  1. Check the edition. Open your licensed copy and compare its edition with NICET's current reference list. Keep the edition in your practice log.
  2. Start at the contents. Pick a chapter title from the map above and locate its opening page. Repeat until the chapter numbers are familiar.
  3. Move one level deeper. Choose a section heading while reading your own copy, close that location, then find it again from the contents. Record only the section number and time taken.
  4. Practise returning. Move to a different chapter, then return to the first section. Observe whether you remember the route or only the page's appearance.
  5. Review the detour. Note whether you chose the wrong chapter, misread a number or lost your place. Repeat that route slowly before timing it again.

If your licensed reader includes search or bookmarks, you can practise with them too. Keep a second route through the contents so your study does not depend on an unverified test-center feature. Do not treat a failed keyword search as proof that the document lacks the material.

Keep practice notes separate from exam references

NICET's reference rules prohibit handwritten notes and loose pages in test-center references. They permit highlighting and permanently attached tabs or dividers under the published binding rules. An NFPA Handbook is not an accepted substitute. Review the full rules before preparing a physical copy; leave your separate navigation log at home.

Use the Level I guide or I&T Level II guide to connect navigation practice with your exam's outline. The Level I diagnostic can help set study priorities. The Alarm Ladder overview links the other tracks.
