NICET Fire Alarm Level II lookup drill: find the NFPA 72 chapter on a clock

The Level II test is open book, so lookup speed matters. Set a target pace, then answer five questions. Each describes a field situation. Find the chapter in your own NFPA 72, type or pick its number, and press check. After every answer you see your time against your target.

Set your target pace

Pick how many seconds you want to spend finding each answer. After every question you see your time against this target. It is your own goal; the page does not compare you with anyone.

Seconds per question

How the drill works

  • Set a target pace of 60, 90 or 120 seconds a question. It is only your own goal.
  • There are 5 questions, always in the same order.
  • Press start to show a question and begin its clock. Press check to stop it.
  • After each check you see the answer, a short explanation and your time against your target.
  • At the end you see your score and the time for each question.

Your time depends on how your book is tabbed and which edition you use, so compare it only with your own earlier runs and your own target. The questions follow the chapter layout of the 2022 edition of NFPA 72.

These are original practice questions, not exam questions. They do not reproduce code text.

Lookup drill FAQ

How does the NICET Fire Alarm Level II lookup drill work?

Pick a target pace of 60, 90 or 120 seconds, then work five questions in a fixed order. Each one describes a field situation. Find the chapter in your own NFPA 72, type or pick its number and press check to stop the clock. You see the answer, a short explanation and your time against your target.

Which edition of NFPA 72 do I need?

The 2022 edition. The questions follow its chapter layout, and NICET lists NFPA 72 (2022) as an on-screen reference for Level II. NFPA offers free read-only access with a free account, or use your own copy. Answers are chapter numbers only.

How does the drill help on the open-book Level II exam?

Level II gives you 155 minutes for 110 questions, a little under a minute and a half each, so a slow lookup eats time you need for the rest. You cannot add tabs to an on-screen PDF, and printed references with permanently attached tabs or dividers are also allowed under NICET's published binding rules. Either way, the drill trains the habit that carries over: name the chapter before you open the book.

How fast should I be?

There is no set time to hit. Your time depends on how your book is tabbed and which edition you use, so set your own target and compare each run only with your earlier runs. When a question beats your target twice in a row, lower it.

Original questions that train you to land on the right NFPA 72 (2022) chapter fast in your own copy of the book. A study aid; the adopted code and the authority having jurisdiction decide real jobs.
