NICET certifies fire alarm technicians in levels. Each level has its own exam and its own experience requirement. Employers, authorities having jurisdiction and many contracts ask for a minimum level, so the next level is often the next pay step. Alarm Ladder takes the levels one at a time. Start with a free diagnostic weighted to the exam you're sitting next, and see which part of the outline needs the most work.

The ladder

  • Fire Alarm Systems Level I is the entry rung: 85 questions in 110 minutes. Installation and maintenance make up almost all of it, and it is the only fire alarm level you can take from home on OnVUE online proctoring. Read the Level I guide.
  • Fire Alarm Systems Level II is 110 questions in 155 minutes at a Pearson VUE test center. Submittal preparation and system layout grow to 20–30% of the exam, so expect power supply and battery loading, shop drawings and device layout as well as installation and maintenance. Read the Level II guide.
  • Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems Level II is a separate track for people who inspect and test systems: 80 questions in 110 minutes. Half or more of the exam is testing specialized and interfaced equipment. Read the I&T Level II guide.

Each level also needs documented work experience verified by a supervisor. The exam is only one part of moving up, so check the requirements for your level on NICET's own program pages before you book.

Open book, on screen

The fire alarm exams are open book. NFPA 72 and NFPA 70 appear as PDFs on the test-center screen, and the I&T exam adds NFPA 92. Knowing where things are matters as much as knowing the answer, so practise finding sections quickly in your own copy. NFPA offers free read-only online access to its codes with a free account. We cite sections by number and never reproduce code text.

NICET has said the fire alarm systems exams will move to a newer NFPA 72 edition around mid-2027, with the date to be confirmed. We tag every question with the code edition it was written against.

How to use Alarm Ladder

  1. Take the free diagnostic for your next exam: 25 questions weighted to the published outline, with no signup.
  2. Look at your weakest domain and read that part of the exam guide.
  3. Practise finding the relevant sections in your own NFPA 72 against the clock.
  4. Retake the diagnostic a week before your exam.

The diagnostic questions are original drafts in beta while credential holders review them. They are never real or recalled exam questions.
