Nevada fire alarm designer and NICET Level II: what the state asks for
Does Nevada require NICET for fire alarm work? For designers, yes, with alternatives. The State Fire Marshal's rules in Nevada Administrative Code (NAC) Chapter 477 say a designer of fire sprinkler or alarm systems must hold a valid NICET Level II certification or an equivalent, or hold a Nevada professional engineer license. The same rules license the firms and register the technicians who install and service fire alarm systems, but the rule text we read does not name NICET for those roles. Confirm current details with the State Fire Marshal before you apply.
Who needs a license or registration
Under NAC 477.300, a person who sells, services, maintains or installs fire alarm systems, other than as someone else's employee, needs a State Fire Marshal license. Each person that firm employs for the work needs a certificate of registration. Under NAC 477.345 the license for fire alarm work is the firm classification called Type F, and the firm must also hold a state contractor's license that fits the work.
NAC 477.346 says people who supervise or perform installation, maintenance or service must hold a registration and work for a licensee. NAC 477.348 says someone who wants to install, repair or test for maintenance must pass a written examination and pay the fee. The rule text does not list NICET as a substitute for that examination, so ask the agency what it accepts.
Where NICET appears
NAC 477.300, subsection 12, is the NICET rule. A designer must hold one of these:
- A valid NICET Level II certification, or an equivalent certification.
- A professional engineer license under Nevada's engineering law, NRS Chapter 625.
The rule does not say which NICET program counts, so ask whether Fire Alarm Systems is the program expected for alarm design. The comparison of the two NICET tracks explains how the programs differ.
The plans checklist words it slightly differently
The State Fire Marshal's plans submittal checklist says fire alarm plans must come from a contractor licensed for fire alarm systems by that office, with plans, material specifications, battery calculations and wiring diagrams. For the designer it names NICET Level II or a Nevada professional engineer license, and does not repeat the "equivalent certification" wording that the rule uses. If you rely on an equivalent, check with the agency first.
Other points from the rules
- A fire alarm installer or distributor must show it can restore a system within a day of being told of a fire or fault, and must hold a state contractor's license.
- Plans go to the authority having jurisdiction and need approval before installation.
- Inspections required by the adopted NFPA standards must be done by a person the State Fire Marshal has licensed or certified to inspect.

If you are working toward Level II, the free 10-question Level II check scores you by domain so you know where to start. It is practice for the NICET Fire Alarm Systems Level II exam, not for any Nevada test, and it does not predict a result. If your design work will need more than Level II, see the Level II to Level III guide.
For another state that names NICET for designers, see the Ohio page or the Oklahoma page. For the full list, see NICET state requirements for fire alarm licenses.
