NICET Fire Alarm Exam Day: Booking, ID and Checklist
You schedule a NICET fire alarm exam with Pearson VUE after your application is processed and paid, inside a six-month testing window you pick during the application. Bring two matching, unexpired IDs, arrive 30 minutes early and expect to leave your phone, watch and notes in a locker. Those rules, and the rescheduling costs below, come from NICET's Fire Alarm Systems candidate handbook (August 2026 edition). NICET says its rules can change, so confirm them on nicet.org and in your Pearson VUE confirmation email before test day.
Booking the exam
- Apply and pay. Add the application card for your level in your NICET account and buy the exam.
- Pick your window. During the application you choose a six-month window for testing. That window is what gives you room to find a convenient date.
- Schedule with Pearson VUE. Once the application is processed you can schedule right after payment is processed. Use the "Schedule" section of your NICET account, which links to Pearson VUE.
- Choose test center or online (Level I only). Level I can also be taken with an online proctor. Levels II, III and IV are taken at a test center.

Installation
A supplied module drawing labels COM, NO and NC. The door interface needs a switched contact that is open while the relay is at rest and closes when the relay operates. Which pair matches that instruction?

What it costs to move the date
- More than 24 hours before the exam, rescheduling inside the same window is free.
- Within 24 hours, or into a new window, the fee is half the original testing fee.
- Canceling a scheduled exam does not earn a refund.
- Online proctored Level I candidates can reschedule up to the appointment without extra fees.
The practical rule: pick a date you can hold. If your work schedule is uncertain, book early in the window, so you have room to move once without cost.
ID and arrival rules at a test center
- Arrive 30 minutes early for sign-in.
- Bring two original, unexpired IDs. One is a primary ID with name, photo and signature, such as a driver's license or passport. The other is a secondary ID with name and signature, such as a credit card.
- The first and last name you registered with must match exactly the name on your ID. Digital IDs are not accepted.
- Personal items stay out of the room. That covers bags, notes, books, phones, pagers, watches and wallets. Lockers are provided.
- If you arrive more than 15 minutes late and are refused admission, the testing fee is forfeited, and you may need to request re-authorization and pay again.
The name match catches people. If your NICET account says "Mike" and your license says "Michael," fix it before you book, not at the desk.
For Level I online, the handbook lists its own rules: log in 15 minutes early, use a webcam of at least 640x480, a walled room with a closed door, and no one else in the room. Tablets, mobile hotspots and a second person entering mid-exam are all prohibited, and a work computer's firewall may block the session.
What the session looks like
Each session starts with a tutorial, so you see the interface before the clock matters. You see one question at a time and can move forward and back. Some questions have an exhibit you open with a button. Some have more than one correct answer, and you are told how many to pick. A few ask you to click part of a picture. A basic and a scientific calculator are built in, and personal calculators are not allowed.
You are told pass or fail when you finish and get a preliminary score report. A full score report appears in the Pearson VUE portal within 14 days. If you do not pass, the report shows a scaled score with the percent correct for each domain, which is your starting point for the next attempt. If that happens, read what to study after failing a NICET exam. You can reschedule after 30 days, with at most three attempts in any 12 months.
Accommodations under the ADA are requested from NICET at test@nicet.org and must be settled at least 10 business days before the exam date. Do not leave that to the last week.
A seven-day checklist
This is a study routine, not a prediction of what NICET will ask. It assumes you have done most of your preparation already. If you are still setting up the weeks before your date, the free NICET study plan builder lays them out.
Seven days out
- Confirm your appointment, your ID names and your test center address. Drive the route or plan the commute.
- Take a timed practice block to check your pace. Our open-book time management article covers how to budget the clock.
Five days out
- Review your miss log: the topics you got wrong, grouped by domain. Do not start new topics.
- Run your lookup routine. The references are open book, so the skill is finding things fast.
Three days out
- One last timed block. Note how many questions you flagged.
- Settle your plan for flagged questions: answer, flag, move on, and return if time is left.
The day before
- Light review only. Pack your two IDs and leave the bag at home or in the car.
- Sleep matters more than another hour of review.
Test day
- Eat. Arrive 30 minutes early. Use the tutorial to settle in.
Find your weak domain before the clock starts
If you have not yet measured where you stand, take the free 10-question Level I check. It gives you a score by domain and names your weakest one. Ten questions is a small sample, so it is a starting line.
Strobe, our AI study buddy, can explain why an answer is right and the others are wrong, and where to look it up, after you answer. It is an AI and cannot predict your result. For the full question bank and timed forms, see the plans.
