NICET Fire Alarm Exam Cost: What You Will Pay
NICET Fire Alarm Systems application fees are $235 for Level I, $325 for Level II, $380 for Level III and $435 for Level IV, effective 1 August 2026. Because each level needs the exams of the levels below it, your real cost to reach a level is the fees added together. Add rescheduling, renewal and study materials and the total is what you plan around. Here is the math in one place.
The fees, straight from NICET
These are the standard model application fees on NICET's fee page, in US dollars, with no state or local tax added.
| Level | Application fee |
|---|---|
| Level I | $235 |
| Level II | $325 |
| Level III | $380 |
| Level IV | $435 |
NICET says fees can change at any time, so check the page the week you buy.
Your running total by target level
Fire alarm certification needs the exams for your level and every level below it. If you pay each level's fee as you go, your total to reach a level looks like this:
- Level I: $235.
- Level II: $235 + $325 = $560.
- Level III: $235 + $325 + $380 = $940.
- Level IV: $235 + $325 + $380 + $435 = $1,375.
Treat these as application fee totals, not a quote. Your own path can differ, for example if you hold credit from another NICET program. Our certification cost calculator and the fees guide cover the extra cases.

Rescheduling: free if you plan ahead
NICET says rescheduling more than 24 hours before your exam is free within the same testing window. Inside 24 hours, or for a new window, the fee is half the original testing fee. In invented numbers, a Level II reschedule that triggers the fee would cost $325 / 2 = $162.50. Remote proctored candidates can reschedule right up until the appointment without a fee. The fix is simple: do not book until you have a study plan, and book a date you can keep.
Renewal and late fees
NICET lists a base recertification fee of $220, which includes one subfield, and $60 for each additional subfield. Retired status is $50. A late fee of $125 applies to bring an expired certification back to active status, on top of the other recertification charges. Certification runs on a three year cycle and renewal needs continuing professional development points, so see the renewal guide before you assume the fee is the only cost.

- Study material. Your NFPA 72 access matters most. NFPA offers free read-only access with a free account, and you may want your own copy on exam day. Check NICET's reference list for what is allowed.
- Time off work. A test center day and the travel to it. Level I can be taken online.
- Practice. Our free 10-question check costs nothing. Paid options vary, so compare what each includes before you buy.
Where people waste money
Booking too early is the big one. Eligibility runs 6 months from purchase, and a failed attempt means waiting 30 days before a retest, with at most three attempts in 12 months. Each retest is another fee under NICET's model, so confirm the retest charge with NICET before you plan around it. A cheaper first step is to measure your gaps. Our guide on what to do after a failed exam shows how to log misses by cause, and the same habit works before you book.
Is it worth the money?
Compare the total to what your employer, your state license rules or your bids ask for. Our look at whether NICET fire alarm certification is worth it walks through that comparison. Ask whether your employer pays the application fee. Many do not volunteer it.
